Linux催化剂两年之旅:8.6-10.6 23版横评

RV770 Radeon HD 4800系列显卡已经发布了两年之久了,Phoronix.com近日做了一次回顾横评,把两年来的Linux系统版催化剂驱动汇聚到一起,看看它们对Radeon HD 4850的影响有何变化。
Radeon HD 4800系列发布之际,AMD第一次同步放出了Linux版本驱动,也就是催化剂8.6(催化剂8.7正式支持Radeon HD 4870/4850),之后也一直提供这样的支持,很多曾经广为诟病的地方也都逐渐完善起来,相当大的程度上已经可以和Windows版本相媲美。

本应该有25个版本,每月一个,不过催化剂9.2已被AMD从官方下载服务器上撤掉,无法测试,而催化剂9.12 bug比较多,本次测试平台上无法完成初始化,所以实际测试的是23个版本。

测试平台硬件配置:Core 2 Duo E8400 OC 3.87GHz双核心处理器、技嘉GA-EP45T-DS3R主板、2GB DDR3内存、西部数据WD1600JS-00M 160GB SATA硬盘、帝盟Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 625/993MHz显卡。
测试平台软件配置:Ubuntu 8.04 LTS操作系统(默认配置)、Linux 2.6.24系统内核(x86_64)、GNOME 2.22.3桌面环境、X.Org Server 1.4.0.90、EXT3文件系统。

Nexuiz 2.5.2(鏖战废土):游戏速度从最初的76FPS提高到了今天的89FPS,期间也经历过8.10-9.3、10.2-10.5的短暂倒退。

World of Padman 1.2(帕德曼的世界):开头的8.6版和结尾的10.6版都不够好,但游戏本身硬件要求非常低,这两款驱动的帧率也都达到了188FPS,之前的10.5版甚至飚到了306FPS。

OpenArena 0.8.5:初期表现非常好,8.6版就有230FPS,第二个月升至243FPS,但随后一路下滑,从9.1版开始基本稳定,10.5版窜升回到将近240FPS,最新的10.6版却又大幅跌至150FPS左右。当然了,这么高的帧率,多少差个几十帧没什么不同。

Warsow 0.5:该游戏对显卡要求也不高,而催化剂两年来的支持也非常稳定,变化不大,其中8.6版是135FPS,10.6版则是148FPS。

VDrift 2009-06-15:8.6版几乎无法运行,但随后立刻恢复正常,8.7版就有了52FPS,之后基本稳中有升,10.5版的时候位72FPS,但是最新的10.6版却跌到了57FPS。

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Demo(敌占区雷神战争):Unigine Heaven/Tropics/Sanctuary等测试程序无法在早期版本催化剂上运行,所以这个游戏就成了最耗资源的OpenGL游戏。8.6版最初 表现不够好,但是8.7-9.5版一直不错,随后9.6版大幅下跌,之后起起落落,直到10.6仍然没有恢复当初的水平。

Lightsmark 2008:整体稳中有升,最初就有175FPS,10.5版最高达到过217FPS,10.6版则略有下滑。

Render Bench:8.6-10.5版常年一直波澜不惊,只有10.2版短暂地大幅倒退过一次,最新的10.6版突然更好了,测试时间从73秒钟大幅缩短到仅仅37秒钟。

JXRenderMark 1.0.1:三个项目的成绩都基本稳定,只有2008年的时候几个版本有过短暂下滑,10.2版则小小地高潮过一次。
小结:
绝大部分OpenGL测试项目都显示,催化剂10.7相比10.6有了本质性的变化,毕竟后者是首次初步支持Radeon HD 4800系列显卡,前者才提供了正式支持。之后两年里,催化剂驱动不断完善,这两年里的性能普遍好于2008年,只是最新出炉的催化剂10.6虽然提供了 不少Linux系统下的新特性,但性能却有全面倒退(除了Render Bench),可能是和变化比较大有关,希望今后能恢复正常水平。
仅就本次测试而言,催化剂10.5应该是Linux OpenGL性能最好的驱动,而且也是基本上最新的。当然,如果你需要RHEL 5.5支持、全新2D加速架构、OpenGL 4.0/3.3规范支持等新特性,又不在乎游戏性能的倒退,就可以升级到催化剂10.6了。
最好需要指出的一点是,本次测试使用的系统是比较古老的Ubuntu 8.04,驱动性能表现可能会和新系统上有所不同。

JXRenderMark 1.0.1:三个项目的成绩都基本稳定,只有2008年的时候几个版本有过短暂下滑,10.2版则小小地高潮过一次。
小结:
绝大部分OpenGL测试项目都显示,催化剂10.7相比10.6有了本质性的变化,毕竟后者是首次初步支持Radeon HD 4800系列显卡,前者才提供了正式支持。之后两年里,催化剂驱动不断完善,这两年里的性能普遍好于2008年,只是最新出炉的催化剂10.6虽然提供了 不少Linux系统下的新特性,但性能却有全面倒退(除了Render Bench),可能是和变化比较大有关,希望今后能恢复正常水平。
仅就本次测试而言,催化剂10.5应该是Linux OpenGL性能最好的驱动,而且也是基本上最新的。当然,如果你需要RHEL 5.5支持、全新2D加速架构、OpenGL 4.0/3.3规范支持等新特性,又不在乎游戏性能的倒退,就可以升级到催化剂10.6了。
最好需要指出的一点是,本次测试使用的系统是比较古老的Ubuntu 8.04,驱动性能表现可能会和新系统上有所不同。
