For the midtier enterprise, there are more affordable solutions. We've sung the praises of Ipswitch, Netcordia, Neon Software and SolarWinds for ease of use and monitoring functionality. Next year, SolarWinds and Netcordia will add network configuration to their products.
Freeware management products should be considered a viable option in 2006. Although Big Brother, for instance, was purchased by Quest, and Nagios and other freeware folks are offering support for a price, freeware management software is still free.
As for features, freeware has good availability monitoring, performance and configuration functionality. Other functions, such as support for transaction applications and service management, centralized common data stores and distributed computing, are nonexistent, with the exception of the OpenNMS GNU project. OpenNMS has yet to catch up to the large enterprise management suites, but it just might surface in 2006 as a serious contender in the management market.
